Girlfriends, Digiorno Pizza, Music, TABOO and Stillettos...

Look closely...and Check out the wine glass and Digiorno Pizza...hahaha

This past Saturday night, I got together with my girlfriends for what we call a:

"GIRL's NIGHT IN"

Everyone brings a dish and alcoholic bevarage and we get together to talk, laugh, cry, vent and play games. I love getting together at A's house...the decor makes me think I'm in a Brownstone in Manhattan girl! Love it!

Just to let you know - I brought my favorite: Sutter Home White Zinfandel...and I made Sweet-n-Sour Meatballs (which were a favorite of the night - I think)...

We played taboo and anyone who knows me will tell you that I'm very competitive. Its an ALL out war when I'm playing to win at anything.

Anyway, this particular night, we had 2 new sisters join us for the fun. AND the 2 new sisters just happened to be on my team. And boy was I hard on them...but we ended up making out ok.

If R.M. and Mrs. Tig ole' Biddies (picture of her will post soon - lol) team didn't cheat we would've won. Yes - Ya'll cheated. My team should've WON. PERIOD.

But when your dealing with people from Bea-ti-more (specifically PARK HEIGHTS), anything is possible...LMAO (yeah - I said it, and what?)!!!

But most importantly, we had a great time together. As we always do. I love my friends so much...I really do...These ladies have truly shown me the REAL meaning of friendship and sisterhood. They are the ones who taught me what the true meaning and measure of friendship is.

I SOOOO Love the sisterhood! Its what keeps me going.

More pic's to come...

Special shot out to my girl D for taking the pic's of the nights festivities with her thousand dollar Japanese made camera...get em' girl. LOL

My IPOD - Most Played...Bruce Hornsby and Friends (Bonnie Raitt "I Can't Make You Love Me...")

I love this song live...she sings it like it happened to her. The words and melody flow from her like she's lived it.

You can actually hear the pain in her voice when she sings this live...Bruce really compliments her on this track...Anyway, I love the entire album...its an oldie but goodie...but strictly for REAL music lovers...

My New White Dress...

I need to stay out of the stores...PERIOD. I will admit on the internet that I am an emotional shopper. I have an addiction...

I shop when I'm happy, sad, melancholy, horny, moody, tired. I need addiction counseling for shopping.

Yesterday, when I got of off work. BTW - I was so happy to have gotten off of work at a reasonable hour...I got to meet my Mom and daughter for dinner and shopping! It was fabulous. Its been ages since I've been able to go to the mall and not feel rushed...I picked up the cutest dress by Michael Kors - it looks so hott on me...and it fits the waist just right...IT's GORGEOUS!!

The white on my brown skin looks incredible....ummph!! I'm getting goose bumps just thinking about it...The picture doesn't do the dress justice...but as soon as I get it on...I'll post it...

Where will I wear it ??? hmmm....

I also picked up some clearance items from the limited...their early spring blouses...but I'll be able to carry them over into the summer...I know you're all thinking: "Who in the hell cares?" Right??

Smooches!!!

What I've Learned....

I haven’t been able to blog lately – I’ve been so busy, new jobs, new projects, etc. But honestly, I haven’t really had anything to say for a couple of weeks until today. I was inspired by spam email today…LOL

I'm so tired of getting the spam emails that always say - I've learned, this or I've learned that...

I thought that I'd come up with my own version of it...Because I'm paying attention for the double-0-7 you know? I'm trying to change for the better...and I realized that I’ve learned a lot lately….So here we go:

I’ve learned that getting in an accident and totaling your brand new car can ruin your life. LMAO!!!

Ok Seriously – here is what I really learned….

I've learned that as I get older, my periods get worse, the cramps are worse, the attitude sucks and I be come a bitch on wheels...literally.

I've learned that I'm crazy and deranged at least 6 to 10 days before I get my period (cycle for those of you who are 35 and over) hahaha

I've learned that if I want to be in a relationship, or get married - I have to get my PMS symptoms under control or I might end up murdering my boyfriend or husband...That's my word too. LMAO

I've learned that people (b*tches a.k.a. friends) always want you to listen and give advice for their problems but sometimes, they really don't feel like hearing yours ( I know - cause I'm one of those people)

I've learned that if you love or really like somebody - they instantly become cute. You could be dating a guy that looks a hott azz mess, but if you like him hunie - to you, he's the finest thing walking the streets.... (Thanks TC for that one girl) LOL

I've learned that I'm an expert in the art of procrastination

I've learned that I'm addicted to shopping and I either need an intervention or counseling. I've also REALIZED that I have too many clothes and I need a "closet makeover."

I've learned that being in ANY type of relationship (friendship, marriage, boyfriend/girlfriend, etc.) is something that takes work. You have to work hard at maintaining it and keeping it every day.

I've learned that I eat too much and I'm greedy.

I've also learned that if I continue to do so, I'll eventually develop high blood pressure and diabetes like the majority of the people in my family.

I've learned that I am not looking forward to turning 30 years old. (EEW)

I've learned that following and living out your dreams is far more important than anything. EVEN MONEY.

I am still LEARNING that its ok to be vulnerable, hurt and rejected. I'm still learning this. I'm also learning that FEELING vulnerable, hurt and rejected is not a sign of weakness.

I’m learning that its ok to love someone first…even if they don’t know it, love you back, acknowledge it or accept it. I learned that I shouldn’t love someone to get it back…I should love because it is a God given right.

I've learned that the measure and worth of a friendship is SOOO not based on the amount of time or years you've known a friend.

I've learned that a friend I had for 5 years has more love and respect for me than the ones I had for 20....

Straight from the heart,
~J

Why Me?

"The Scorpio woman is made to be loved,
looked for and respected for the pleasures she can offer.
If she is also educated, what else can a man ask for?"
Women born under this sign are thought to have a complex, analytical, keenly perceptive, inquisitive, focused, determined, hypnotic, and self-contained character, but one which is also prone to extremity, jealousy, secretiveness, possessiveness, stubbornness, cruelty and cunning.

Scorpio is symbolized by the Scorpion
Birthdates: October 23 - November 21 Element of the Scorpio zodiac sign: Water

The Last King of Scotland...

I checked out this movie last night...although I missed about 20 minutes of the movie...it was pretty good. The only downfall is that with movies like this - you really have to go into it knowing the historical background (which I didn't have at the time). And with historical films about Africa and people of color - you have to make sure you get your historical information from an objective source.

But otherwise, it was ok. Forest Whitaker was awesome (As usual) in his role as the powerful but unhinged Ugandan President.

However, Kerry Washington (who was stunningly beautiful in the movie) could've been stronger in potraying her character Kay Amin (his 3rd wife)...

I say this because I'm sure Kay was quite a character in real life to have been bold enough to sleep with a Full Bred WHITE Scottish doctor and then to add insult to inury: get pregnant.

She really risked her life - and ultimately paid the price for doing this...This had to be an interesting and complex woman to be able to take such a risk in that day in time in Africa and also knowing the culture and the role of women there.

Because of this, I was expecting more from Kerry in her portrayal. She could've digged deeper. Kerry lacked the passion that I know a woman like Kay Amin had.

But other wise...it was a good movie...Go See it!

There is nothing like catching up with an old friend (The things that matter the most)...

Wow...Its nothing like catching up with an old friend.

It was good to be greeted with an old but familiar face. Some people say that the past should be left where it is. There are so many negative things associated with the past (for me anyway). But this old friend was a welcomed face from my yesterday.

Although our time was short, we were able to spend time, talk, share and most importantly we had the opportunity to reminisce...

What was really comforting was that I knew that my old friend was listening to me. I mean genuinely listening to my words and concerns. It felt good not to have the pressure. It was refreshing. I really enjoyed it. It meant so much to me.

It felt so good to be able to touch, laugh and "just be" with my old friend. I didn't want that moment to end...

When we were together...It dawned on me how good it felt to just to be able to laugh...and for my friend to share that that with me.

Those are the little things that matter the most. Its those little things that keep the heart beating...And I truly thank God that at the tender age of 27, I am able to recogonize that those are the things in life that matter the most.

The touch, the laughs, and just being able to be...
Thank you M.W.

Its official: I'm addicted...to make up.

I've realized that I'm addicted to make up and beauty products. The above picture is of me on January 6th...a day out with my best friend for a preview of Mac's new spring colors in Columbia...I was so excited that day. I remember telling Cher, "Girl, I'm not buying nothing, I'm chilling" and I also remember us both walking out of Nordstrom with MAC Cosmetic bags in our hands. Truly Incredible Right?
Anyway, this past weekend, somewhere in my travels, I lost my make up bag. Over $400.00 worth of products...Gone. Hopefully, someone will be able to make use of the bag (Chanel) and products that I could not live without.

I actually didn't even want to go anywhere this past weekend. I was devistated. I felt naked. It was unbelievable...I was really surprised at how dependent
I was on a bunch of chemicals and paint! LOL

I have started the painful and expensive process of replacing some of the items...there's still a bunch of stuff I need so I got a head start yesterday on my lunch break and I picked up the following:

Liners: Nightmoth, Currant, Chestnut

Eyeshadow: Expresso, Carbon, Honesty

Lip Sticks: Ruby Woo, Honey Love, Vixen, Viper, Snob

CHANEL Glossimer - Glitter & Sunset Gold

Concealer - NW45

MAC Mini Brush Kit

I could really kick myself in the ass for this one...I've already spent a ton of damn money replacing this stuff and I'm not even half way there.

Life as a girl...ain't easy. Although I was irritated as hell yesterday when my "personal make up consultant" (LOL) informed me of my total $$$$$

But as I swiped my BOA card at Nordstrom's...inside, I felt a sense of ease and peace.

I was relieved, settled and content.

When I arrived home to open my goodies it was weird...I felt "put together again."

There is a Method to the Madness...

I've been going through hell at my job lately...working long and grueling hours, pitching, writing, editing, proofing, creative concepting, brainstorming, writing reports, research, meetings after meetings...Just to give you an idea - one day I went into the office at 8:00 a.m. and didn't stop working until after MIDNIGHT...and let's not get started on the pay...

But anyway, I realized something...this job has given me the opportunity to learn so much than I could have ever imagined. I'm getting more experience than some people who've been in the business for 4 years. And I was able to break into the industry with NO direct experience in the field - NONE.

And to top it off...my work ethic and follow through is sick these days.
I don't mean to brag...but I am excellent with meeting client and company deliverables and multi-tasking, and bringing fresh and creative ideas to projects and proposals.

But most importantly, I've become an integral part of my team.

My job and clients depend on me everyday at work. I've been able to sharpen my strategic thinking skills (which is a must in this profession) and I've been able to develop and implement various types of marketing and public relations plans for my clients. And I've been able to deliver results.

Although sometimes I work a 75 hour work week with a salaried compensation package = translation: no overtime (unbelievable right???) I wouldn't trade this experience for anything in the world. But its been a hard and lonely path...it really has. I've faced alot of challenges...but I've been able to overcome them...

Ok, Ok, I'm getting to the point with this post now...

Years ago and to this day, My grandmother has given the same advice to those going through in our family "Child, God usually doesn't put too much on you if he know you can't bear it...but remember, when you're in what seems to be a storm, at the end...Jehovah will only give you double (blessing that is...) for you trouble."

And Lord did I get double for my 75 hour work weeks this January with no lunch breaks!!
After all the hard work and long hours...I've been given an opportunity through my job to meet:

Nikki Giovanni, "The Princess of Black Poetry"

Yes, that's right. Up front, close and personal.

I will be in the presence of a living legend. I'll be able to get a look at that "Thug Life" tattoo she has on her arm...which she had done to commemorate TuPac's death (interesting tidbit...right??) Well its confirmed People....I like so love my job today! LOL

Moving on...
This moment will be so important to me....I can remember the first time I was knowingly introduced to the words of Yolande Cornelia Giovanni, Jr. clear as day...

I was sitting underneath of the table in our kitchen (one of my favorite spots) at the age of 7 listening to the album Truth Is On Its Way (1971)...I can remember hearing the words of the poem Ego Tripping (there may be a reason why) fill the entire house and I would dance around, cornrows swinging and all with snaggle teeth looking a hott mess...

But anyway,

I remember the first time I really heard that poem, my imagination took me there...I too was on the Nile...imagining the glorious site of her Son giving her Rome for Mother's Day...

And then there was Nikki-Rosa - a poem that I would hear numerous times as a child and pre-teen while attending poetry readings, seminars and black power/African History lectures with my father.

But it was a poem that I would not connect with and understand until I became a woman.

I didn't get this poem until I started living this life as a black person, experiencing the struggles everyday at work, school, college and just life in general. I didn't get it until I was able to reflect...and we all know that reflection can only take place unless we live and grow.

Today, this is a poem that I read regularly. For some reason, it brings me comfort. Its framed in and hanging in my office.

Although the tone of the poem could be characterized as melancholy...There is something about it that's is proud.

There is something about it that causes ME to stand upright after reading it.

Some may not get it the way that I do. But that poem tells the story and plight of the Black Family in America in the 60's and 70's...the time of my parents.

Although they were poor and had to deal with racism, and discrimination, they were rich in love. Back then, Black Love, was Black Wealth...When my parents were raising us...Back then, Black Love meant something.

Asking what does it mean now is a whole other blog!!! LOL

At any rate...I'm just proud that Nikki will be able to autograph my Dad's vintage copy of Truth Is On Its Way and my store bought CD. LOL - Wow have times changed....

But what still remains is the legacy of her work...Who would have though that I'd be playing Nikki for my own child...who just happens to be 7?

I wonder what her reflections and memories of hearing Ego Tripping and Nikki Rosa mean for her?

Only time will tell.
###
Ladies and Gentleman, I give you: Nikki Rosa by Nikki Giovanni
childhood remembrances are always a drag if you’re Black
you always remember things like living in Woodlawn with no inside toilet
and if you become famous or something
they never talk about how happy you were to have your mother all to yourself
and how good the water felt
when you got your bath from one of those big tubs
that folk in Chicago barbecue in
and somehow when you talk about home
it never gets across how much you understood
their feelings as the whole family attended meetings about Hollydale
and even though you remember
your biographers never understand your father’s pain
as he sells his stock and another dream goes
and though you’re poor it isn’t poverty that concerns you
and though they fight a lot it isn’t your father’s drinking that makes any difference
but only that everybody is together and you and your sister
have happy birthdays and very good Christmases
and I really hope no white person ever has cause to write about me
because they never understand that Black love is Black wealth
and they’ll probably talk about my hard childhood and
never understand that all the while I was quite happy
